I am now on a mission to compete in the Seniors-level races in Virginia next year (2022). This goal is my ultimate motivation to become the best I can be.
Over the past two months, I’ve begun training consistently for the upcoming races. On average, I ride 85 miles per week at a steady pace of 18.5 mph. These rides are done solo, without the benefit of group slipstreaming or drafting.
Since I burn about 1,000 calories per ride, maintaining a diet that supports my training and recovery is just as important as the time spent on the bike. It’s all about setting myself up for success!
Enter the Mediterranean Diet. One of my biggest challenges has been improving my sleep, and I’ve learned that eating like an Italian might be the key. Perhaps that’s one reason why Europeans excel as cyclists? Research suggests that the Mediterranean Diet promotes better sleep, which is essential for recovery and rejuvenation. With more restful nights, I can build muscle more efficiently and stay on track to lose 5 to 10 more pounds. Currently, I’m at 172 (as of 10/06/21) but aiming for a lean 168—fit, trim, and ready to race!
As next year approaches, I’ll post my race schedule here, along with results as they happen.
I’m excited for this journey. Life is too short not to pursue every opportunity to live it fully while taking care of my body. Let the racing begin!
